PhD Student Conference 2012

3rd young scientists Excellence Cluster Conference on Marine and Climate Research: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Global Change - October 1 - 2, in Kiel

This annual meeting is jointly organized by early career scientists of the three marine and climate Clusters of Excellence of Kiel (Future Ocean), Bremen (MARUM), and Hamburg (CliSAP). PhD Students and Postdocs from the three Clusters and associated institutes are invited to participate and to submit an abstract to one of the scientific sessions focusing on climate, marine, and Earth System research, including nature-society interactions. The goal is to discuss and share expertise on these interconnected topics and to strengthen collaborations on an early career stage.

PhD student conference 2011

2nd Young Scientist Excellence Cluster Conference on Marine and Climate Research: Perspectives from Natural and Social Sciences - October 4 - 5, in Bremen

The conference is organized by and for PhD students and PostDocs from the three Clusters of Excellence from Bremen (MARUM), Kiel (Future Ocean), and Hamburg (CliSAP), as well as associated institutes. Last year the conference took place in Hamburg and was a great success in terms of interdisciplinary exchange and networking among early career scientists of the three clusters. This year in Bremen the conference aims at bringing together young scientists from the natural and social sciences - biological, geological, chemical, physical, economical, medical, psychological, journalistic, legal, and political fields - to discuss and improve our understanding of the integrated nature of the ocean - climate - society system.

The conference offers young scientists a forum to present and discuss their own research in an interested and multidisciplinary environment. Also, it provides the opportunity to uncover links between widely ranging topics, thereby fostering the interdisciplinary nature of the research carried out by the young scientists of the three clusters. Participants are thus highly encouraged to present their talks and posters in a way that is understandable to a broad audience. A prize will await PhD students for the best talk and the best poster.

Evaluation criteria will be the general understandibility, clarity of the objectives, soundness of the methodological approach, and ability to orally convey the results.

To foster contact among young scientists, two social events are offered free of charge: a visit to the interactive science center “Universum” on the evening of Monday, 3rd October, and a conference dinner on Tuesday, 4th October.

Do not hesitate to apply and send your registration and your abstract submission by using the registration form.

Deadline for registration and abstract submission is July 1st, 2011!

PhD student conference 2010

October 2010
PhD students from the graduate schools GLOMAR (Global Change in the Marine Realm, Bremen), ISOS (Integrated School of Ocean Sciences, Kiel) and SICSS (School of Integrated Climate System Sciences, Hamburg) hosted a joint conference at the KlimaCampus. This conference has been initiated to strengthen networking and cooperation of PhD students doing research in the field of integrated climate and earth system sciences in Northern Germany. PhD students from Bremen, Kiel and Hamburg presented their work during poster sessions and student talks. The program of the conference was complemented by plenary lectures on topics such as climate policy and economics, open questions in the earth system and support for young scientists. The speakers were Professor Till Requate (Christian Albrechts Universität zu Kiel), Dr. Klaus Wehrberger (German Research Foundation DFG) and Professor Hartmut Graßl (Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology and Meteorological Institute of the University of Hamburg).
